Arsenal to Hold Talks With Defender Kieran Tierney Over his Future

According to recent reports, Arsenal are set to hold talks with left-back Kieran Tierney over his future. The Scottish defender was sent on a season-long loan to Real Sociedad last summer and is set to return to the Emirates at the end of the season.

Kieran Tierney moved to Arsenal in 2019 from Celtic for a deal worth around £25m. He missed the early part of the 2019-20 season due to a double hernia operation. He recovered quickly and cemented his place in the team with some great performances. However, he suffered a shoulder injury later into the campaign, limiting him to only 25 appearances across all competitions.

In August 2023, the 26-year-old was loaned out to Real Sociedad for the whole season. He performed brilliantly against Real Madrid and Granada for which he was labelled ‘exquisite’ by boss Imanol Alguacil. Here, too, the full-back spent quite some time on the sidelines, restricting him only 26 appearances for the La Liga club.

As reported by Football London, Arsenal are set to hold talks with Kieran Tierney and discuss his future at the club after he returns from his loan stint at Sociedad. The report claims that the Gunners are open to discussing a new deal or consider offers for a permanent transfer this summer.

The Scotsman has always been a committed performer, churning out great performances in defence as well as offence. The defender has featured in 124 games for the North Londoners, but his stint at the Emirates has been marred with injuries.

The 26-year-old has suffered a total of 10 injuries in the last seasons, forcing him to be sidelined for 73 games. This also includes two hamstring injuries and one abductor injury he suffered at Real Sociedad this season. The decision on whether he will remain at the Emirates next season or not will be taken after holding discussions with the player.

The Gunners may be willing to offer a new deal, but a permanent transfer is also an option which seems as the more likely possibility, as per the report. The club hierarchy would likely sell if they find a potential offer, especially with the team being stacked in his position.

The North London side have a flurry of options for the left-back role. Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior are the designated players for the position while Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jurrien Timber are also available to fill in. This certainly pushes him down the pecking order at the Emirates.

Moreover, the Scottish international wishes to leave North London on a permanent basis this summer. He is looking to play regular first-team football and the club’s abundance of options for the defensive position certainly decreases the possibility of him getting regular game-time.

The full-back is well aware of the club’s current situation and his place in the team as well. Although his contract with Arsenal extends till the summer of 2026, Kieran Tierney is not sure he will get the requisite playing time at the Emirates in the future. Talking to The Athletic, the left-back said:

“Look at the squad depth in that position now.

‘They have Zinchenko, Timber, Tomiyasu, Kiwior. Four players can play there. So if I go back and it’s the same as before then I’m not silly, I know the chances are I’ll be leaving.

By the end of this summer transfer window, the future of Kieran Tierney at Arsenal will be resolved. His recurring injury issues will be one of the key aspects deciding his future. While he is a top-quality player, major clubs will not want to gamble on a defender who will stay sidelined for the majority of the campaign.
